In going through some photos in preparation for my new website, I came across what I believe to be one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. It is a photo of Laura, a model who I had met just a couple hours earlier. We explored Pismo and Shell Beach and got some great shots. Just thought I'd post it!

Milwaukee During Winter

With all the talk about the crazy weather in California right now, I figured I'd post two shots that show what winter is really about :) These taken at the lakefront this past weekend.

Ashley with a Rollei

I had planned on shooting my Rolleiflex with some black and white film alongside my 5D when shooting with Ashley. For whatever reason, it wasn't until the very end of the shoot (and right before she had to head out for work) that I remembered about the Rollei. I pleaded to let me take 12 more shots...one roll of film. She agreed and I fairly quickly popped off some last images.

I am always surprised with the negatives that come back from the Rollei. They are gorgeous; beautiful dynamic range, lovely tones, etc. Really makes me want to shoot film more and more. Too bad it's so expensive to process...

Anyway, here are two of the twelve photos that I took of Ashley that I particularly like. Hope you enjoy, as always.

On my four day break from work (new years holiday) I was fortunate enough to be able to shoot with Ashley. She was great to work with and we made good use of her house as a shooting location. I was going for a soft look, almost reminiscent of what you'd see in a Victoria's Secret catalog.

Needless to say, I think we both succeed. We managed to get the soft look while also being able to get a few more "edgy" ones...still something that you might see in a Victoria's Secret catalog. I tend to not plan out my shoots very well, and just go with the flow. That method doesn't always work out for me, but I think it did here.

Photos were all shot in natural light, with some help from a un-cooperative reflector at times :)

Anyway, here are the first few that I've edited...hope you enjoy! I may post more later...

2009 - Year In Review

2009 has been a great year photographically for me. I was fortunate to work with some great models and also took the time to take a lot more "snapshots" when out and about. I bought a couple cameras and started taking photos on film again (which I love).

All in all, it was a good year for photos. Here's some of my favorite model photos from this past year. I hope you enjoy and have a great 2010!

I had the opportunity to head home to California with my girlfriend for Thanksgiving. Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery; I miss it. I grew up on the central coast and also went to school there.

Let's just say that if someone told me that I had to live in San Luis Obispo for the rest of my life, I'd be on the plane before they could finish their sentence :)

Took these photos yesterday while on a walk down by the lakefront on what is probably going to be the last decent-weather day of the year. I'm doing a little experimenting with some light processing on these images as well as experimenting with a very minimalistic approach to these photos and others as of late. Samantha and a Rolleiflex

I had another great shoot with Samantha a couple weeks ago and decided I wanted to try my hand at using film alongside my normal digital shooter. My Dad had recently given me his Rolleiflex medium format camera which was the perfect tool for what I wanted to try. I also had decided that I wanted to shoot strictly black and white in the Rollei and picked up some Fuji Neopan 400 film (which I think might be my favorite b&w film ever).

Long story short, the shoot went great and I was very happy with the photos that I got from the Rollei. Oh, and I tried my hand at using my Yashica GSN rangefinder for a few shots as well :)

Anyway, here's some shots from that day:

Scanner and Medium Format

I finally got myself a decent scanner and started scanning some old negatives tonight! These two are from a few years ago when I was testing out my Rolleiflex while working at Jim's Campus Camera in SLO. I have since re-discovered the Rolleiflex and plan to shoot a lot more with it now! I'm also going to shoot more film in general; some on the Rolleiflex and some on my various rangefinders. We'll see how it goes!

First post in a loooong time. I had a chance to shoot a new model a few days ago and was very happy with how the photos turned out (especially since I haven't shot any models in over a year!). It was also my first time trying "studio" photography indoors. I'd played with lights before, but never as my only light source. Anyway, on with the photos! Oh, and they're my first photos on here taken with my new 5D :)

So a friend of mine who recently got engaged asked me to take some pictures of him and his fiance for their invitation. We decided to go down to the sandspit at Montana de Oro to take some photos. We had a good time and I think the photos turned out well considering it was my first time taking photos like this!

Burned House and Mardi Gras

Second post in such a short amount of time...must be a record or something!

Anyway, the first set of pictures are of a house that burned down and the two students that helped save the family inside. One evening when the two friends were heading home, one of them saw a spark of light out of the corner of her eye...the house soon went up in flames and they called 911 and made sure that the family of eight were out safely. I believe these two are going to be receiving a medal presented by the city for their efforts!

I was also assigned to go downtown tonight to shoot the "events" of Mardi Gras. Well as it turned out (and was expected) there were police officers everywhere, but no problems. Oh well. I had to get SOME pictures so my photo editor doesn't yell at me :) So here they are...

Well, since I haven't posted anything in a while, I figured I'd post some pictures that I took with a cheapo disposable camera with Valerie at the beach.

The reason that I haven't posted anything is because my Rebel XT broke. I sent it in a while ago but haven't heard anything from the repair people. Hopefully it get's back soon... In the meantime I've been shooting film and also took my brother's senior pictures using some Portra 160NC. I just sent them into the lab, so we'll see how they turn out, hopefully good!

Procrastination and the President

Quick update...

Was sent to photograph the President of Cal Poly, Warren Baker. I had a good time, although I felt a little rushed and couldn't put the time into each shot that I would have liked. Oh well!

I also had to shoot a reporter (who also happens to work at Jim's Camera, Tyler) for a "Procrastination" article. I enjoyed it, got to use a tiny dark room with one studio light (it was HOT!...the studiolight I mean). I think we got some good pictures, these being my two favortites.

Mini and Vieni Vai

I took a trek downtown today (and a few other places) to finish up some photos for the WOW eddition of the Mustang Daily. I got a few photos which I'm pretty pleased with and a few that I really like.

I saw the Mini while walking to one of my destinations and liked the look of it parked at what seemed like an unusual house for San Luis Obispo. Anyway, I thought it looked neat, so a took a few photos, this being the best of them.

One of my assignments was to go photograph Vieni Vai, a nice italian resturant downtown. I went in talked to the manager, and he allowed me to take some photos. As I was walking around, a girl asked if I wanted some napkins and such on the tables to photograph. I said sure and told her what table to put them on (because of the nice big window next to it). I thought it would be a good idea to take a few photos of her setting up the table, so I asked and she said okay. After she was done, I took a few photos of the table. As it turns out, one of the photos I took of her setting up the table has got to be one of my favorite images I've taken recently. The way the light from the window shown on the table and her is (in my opinion) perfect. I'm glad I got something that I really like because some of my latest pictures have been ho-hum in my opinion. Anyway, here's the shot of her...

The Mustang Daily ran one of my images on the front page of the Summer edition of the newspaper and two of my images on the online edition of the paper. ironically, the picture they chose for the paper was an image I took while passing by the resturant earlier in the day before actually going in for the real shoot. Oh well, at least one of my pictures is there! Feels gooood....:-)

And who knows, a lady came into the store today looking for an assistant for a wedding she's shooting in a few weeks. I told her that I'd be interested and she took my name and phone number...my fingers are crossed!
Now THAT would be cool!

California Pizza Kitchen Opening!

California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) opened up today in SLo and I was assigned to go shoot it...well, not the actual opening but the pandimonium throughout the resturant as it was PACKED, even at lunch time. I had a good time on my first really photojournalistic assignment and I learned a few lessons along the way. First and foremost, never try to use any photographic equipment that you are not completely familiar with on a shoot. I brought an old flash today that I didn't really know how to use, and I missed a lot of good shots because of it. Anyway, enough rambling, here are some shots!

So I shot my first assignment for the Mustang Daily today...

Tom Neuhaus is a food science professor at Cal Poly and teaches America's only university course on chocolate. He also has his own business called "Sweet Earth Organic Chocolates" in which a percentage of his sales goes toward Africa's three Fair trade Certified cocoa cooperatives. He is also going to be traveling to Africa come August to help the cocoa farmers there.

Mustang Daily

The photo editor emailed me and said she was impressed with the ammount of work that went into my portfolio and enjoyed my photos. So now I'm gonna do a test assignment for a paper that's going to be coming out in a few weeks. Hopefully that'll go well! I think I'm really going to enjoy this "job"...:-)

Oh and since this is a photoblog...here are a few pictures of the portfolio that I turned in (cause I don't have any other new photos!)

So I'm about to submit my portfolio to the Mustang Daily photo editor. Hopefully she'll hire me as a staff photographer! That would really help me to take photos more often. I find that if I have nothing specific to take photos of, I don't go out and look, but become lazy and don't take photos at all. Hopefully this will change that :-)
